Invisible Evaluation
The mindset that gets you to Director level will quietly work against the promotion to VP. Being the best problem solver in the room and delivering results personally is no longer the main work being evaluated.Agustin Ramos
Nobody tells you that at Director level the lens of evaluation changes.
Hitting every target.
Delivering every project.
Solving every problem that landed on my desk.
Being the person others came to when something needed doing and doing it well.
That is what I thought was still rewarded at Director level.
But the closer I got to VP level, the more I realised the room above was assessing me on something else entirely.
And because nobody told me that, I kept doing more of what worked before, getting better at the wrong thing, becoming more indispensable in ways that made me look less promotable.
Evaluation stopped being about how well I executed and became a question of organisational leverage, measuring exactly how much better I could make the entire organisation operate without my direct involvement.
That mindset shift between being the best person in the organisation and making the organisation better is what every VP figured out before they got there.
Most Directors never shift it in time.
